Toblerone Cookies

Did everyone have a good Thanksgiving Weekend? I think all of us up here in Canada were drooling over the thought of turkey and all the fixings! The thought of the holidays got me thinking about cookies and when I want cookies I make cookies! But what type of cookies to make? Well, that wasn't so hard to figure out because I had 5 bars of Toblerone chocolates in my kitchen. Toblerone + Shortbread = heaven!

Here's a link to the recipe I'm making later today! http://www.robinhood.ca/recipe.details.asp?prcid=49&rid=3775 If you give it a try let me know how it goes!

Ma Lai Goh!

You're probably wondering what that is right? It's a Malaysian Steamed Sponge Cake (Well, I assume it's of Malaysian origin since Ma Lai means Malay in Chinese). Anyways, I grew up eatting this sweet but not too sweet sponge cake at local dim sum restaurants and in Vancouver's Chinatown. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be as popular as it use to be and the regular dim sum haunts don't serve it though some of the higher end places still do. Well, I was craving for it out of no where the other day and so I googled and much to my delight there was a recipe on Epicurious.com and it had a 4 fork rating!

Here's a slice of my cake. I'm pretty sure I beat the eggs too much trying to get all the lumps of sugar and flour out (even though I sifted) cause the cake is suppose to be light and fluffy but it turned out really dense. Also, the recipe didn't say what temperature to steam it at and for about 10 mins the water was boiling so I think that's another reason why it didn't turn out so fluffy. Would I make it again? Definitely! It was so quick and simple and tasted really good despite my mistakes. I used 1/2 c. brown sugar and 1/2 c. white sugar but really I don't think you need all of it because it was pretty sweet.

Here's the original recipe if you want to try it out!
Ma Lai Goh Recipe  from epicurious.com
Ingredients:
4 Eggs
1 Egg Yolk
1 c. Sugar
1/2 tsp. Vanilla
1 c. Sifted cake flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

Prep:
Beat eggs until light and foamy. Slowly add sugar while beating constantly. Add in vanilla. Mix remaining dry ingredients and fold into egg mixture. Pour batter into slightly greased pan. Steam for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Starry Night

A couple nights ago I set my alarm for 3:00 am and woke up hoping to see a good show of shooting stars. The Leonid meteor shower was supposed to be a big one with reports saying we could expect to see anywhere from thirty to fifty shooting stars each hour or more.  Unfortunately for me, the sky in my neck of the woods was cloudy that night with not even one star visible.

That night may have been a bust, but I still have a super fondness for shooting stars.  I love this meteor shower costume donned by Missa of one of my favorite vintage-y blogs, Thrift Candy, for Halloween.  Indeed, it's one of the most clever costumes I saw:

This pretty costume got me thinking about the possibility of pulling together an outfit using the same inspiration, but making it more suitable for regular wear. I hit up etsy, and here are just a few of my favorite vintage items that remind me of a night sky:

Simple Simon

Oftentimes with vintage goods it's hard to keep from looking completely dated. I like to mix and match pieces (in my wardrobe and my home) so that I can use elements from different eras, but so the overall look is cohesive and modern. Each of these items, while vintage, are thoroughly modern looking, and their basic white hue adds a simplicity that is truly timeless:

Toonie Tuesday!

For those of you who don't know, a toonie is a $2 coin in Canada. Before the economy got bad there were all these fried chicken and fast food places that had special deals on Tuesdays which were promoted as "Toonie Tuesdays". Well, since today is Tuesday and I don't have anything planned for today's post I thought it would be fun to see what you could get on Etsy for $2. I had so much fun I might just have to make this a weekly post! Enjoy!

Interview & Giveaway with Nature Manipulated

I had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle from Nature Manipulated this past week. The Nature Manipulated shop specializes in one of a kind jewelry, paper goods and photography. It is visual and practical art that reflects nature and all of it's elements. Keep reading to find out more about Michelle and how you can win a $10 gift certificate to spend in her shop!

1. Tell us a bit about why you started Nature Manipulated
.
Since I was a young child I have taken art classes or played around with different arts and craft supplies.  After high school, I took a hiatus from art.  I wasn't sure I would get back into it.  Every so often, I would try painting or drawing something but I had a block until .... Approximately five years ago, I bought a pair of earrings at a small NYC boutique. I couldn't really afford them but I REALLY wanted them. After looking at them for awhile I realized I could make a pair just like it. The next day I went to a bead store, and having no prior jewelry making experience, I began making jewelry. My artistic block had disappeared and I found myself dabbling in a new medium.  After making several necklaces and pairs of earrings and giving away many, I decided to try selling some pieces.  My inspiration primarily came from nature - places I have visited, seen in pictures and natural matierals turned to unnatural objects.  Reflecting on my inspiration, there was only one thing my shop could be called - "Nature Manipulated".  Since starting in 2004, I have opened my shop up to my photography (the one thing I never stopped doing) and my one of a kind handmade greeting cards.

2. What are your hobbies or what do you do in your off time away from the shop?
Unfortunately, I do not have much off time but when I do, I play pool, go to restaraunts, work out (well, I am going to start again)... I am also starting to take African dance classes again next month. I'm so excited.  Dancing to live drumming - I LOVE percussion, escpecially hand drums.

3. I notice that you sell on two different venues are there others that you also sell on and do you find it difficult to manage?
I currently only sell on Artfire and Etsy. I started my Etsy shop in 2006 and Artfire earlier this year.  I am trying to establish Artfire as my primary shop and have been devoting most of my promotional efforts to that shop.  It is difficult to manage one shop, let alone two.  There is so much that goes into it besides making your items.  I must say, I spend A LOT of time on the computer: blogging, on Twitter, Facebook and in the Artfire Chatterbox and Etsy forums, as well as other online communities such as byhand.me, indiepublic, and team forums.

4. If you had to pick one piece to feature in your shop what would it be and why?
I hate picking favorites!  Especially becuase I have favorite jewelry pieces, favorite photographs and so on.  If I have to though, I would say, African Dolphin (http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=134375).  The necklace is a perfect combination of earthy, hippee, classy and elegent.  It incorporates my favorite stones, turquoise and carnelian, and the dolphins beads sitting above the center turquoise nugget, give the necklace a sense of life.  If there is any piece I would find hard parting with, it would be this one.

5. Name three other online shops that you would recommend to our readers.
Bean Pickle Sprout - http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&seller_id=15523 (she's also on Etsy).  I have bought several items from this shop as baby shower gifts and everyone loves them.  I also have two pot holders for myself which I absolutely adore and hate that they now have food stains on them.  Will neeed more soon.

Cecil and Company - http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6583899 Such beautiful bags.  I don't have one yet but it's definitely on my handmade holiday list.

This is SO hard ...

Simply Sentimental - http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=110064 Her cards are so fun.  They really POP.

I apologize to everyone I left off.  There really are a lot more.

Michelle is giving one of our readers a chance to win a $10 gift certificate to spend in her Artfire shop.
