The Dark Cottage

A few weeks ago I came across a shop that was exploding with bright and colorful wooden art. Since then, I've been super curious to find out more about what inspired Tobey the owner of thedarkcottage to create these pieces. So I jumped when I got the opportunity to interview her for today's post. Keep reading to learn how Tobey came up with the idea for these bubbly creations!

Lollipop Fields & Rainbow.

1. First off, please tell us about yourself, where you come from, what you like to do.
My name is Tobey and I'm a stay-at-home mom living in a suburb of Chicago. I have 3 daughters who keep me very busy so I don't really have much spare time. If I do happen to get a spare moment, I love to read, craft (obviously!), or jump on the computer to check out my favorite blogs and do a little browsing on etsy. Live music and traveling are some other things that I really enjoy, but we don't get to do that as often as we'd like.

2. Your work is so colorful and fun. Where did you come up with the idea to make these gorgeous key racks?
When I opened my shop, I had no intention of focusing on the bubbley-type key racks. I had plans for repurposed vintage type things. I had all kinds of plans to stick silverware, baby doll parts, and other weird, random bits onto wood and then I stumbled across these balls and fell for them. They looked so cute and all of my other ideas got put on the backburner. It's funny how things worked unexpected.

3. Does it take a lot of time and planning to create one of these pieces?
Most ideas come to me when I'm trying to sleep or in the shower. I also get a lot of inspiration for color combinations and designs from magazines and commercials. It usually takes me about a day to complete one piece. I'm definitely not the type to work in batches....I only have one piece going at a time. Some designs take a little longer and some I can whip out in a few hours....really depends on the design.

Raspberry swirls & Scribbles.

4. What other mediums do you like to work with besides wood?
I love fabric. I can't sew clothing or anything that requires exact measurments (and I admire those who can), but I LOVE to sew and work with fabric. I also love working with paper and gocco machine is my favorite toy. Oh, and upcycling with vintage. I think that's all!

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
My kids will be older so I'm thinking I'll have more time to devote to crafting. I'd like to eventually get into the wholesale and consignment markets. I also plan to start doing craft shows in a year or two. I'll definitely be keeping myself busy!
